Inspired by the quiet artistry and thoughtfulness of Japanese tea culture, Yawaragi of Hotel Okura Manila at Newport World Resorts presents The Art of Matcha Afternoon Tea — a thoughtfully crafted afternoon experience exploring the depth and balance of matcha through refined savory creations and delicately layered pastries.
More than a flavor, matcha has long been regarded as a symbol of Japanese mindfulness and craftsmanship. Its earthy character, mellow bitterness, and calming ritual have made it beloved around the world, appreciated not only for its taste but for the quiet intentionality behind its preparation and presentation.
Conceptualized by Senior Pastry Chef Vi Serrano, the set highlights matcha’s versatility beyond traditional sweets, incorporating it into both savory and pastry creations designed with balance and restraint in mind.
Guests may begin with savory selections such as Matcha Chawanmushi with Matcha Maldon Salt, Matcha Blini with Smoked Salmon, and Wagyu Slider on Matcha Brioche, offering an unexpected introduction to matcha’s subtle umami character.
Rather than overwhelming the palate with sweetness, the afternoon tea embraces contrast and refinement through complementary Japanese flavors such as yuzu, strawberry, azuki red bean, kinako, kuromitsu, and genmaicha. Each component is designed to allow the matcha to remain present and balanced in every bite.
“We wanted guests to leave feeling calm, comforted, and inspired,” Chef Serrano adds. “The experience was designed to feel like a quiet pause from everyday life — thoughtful and memorable without feeling overwhelming.”
Available daily from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Yawaragi, The Art of Matcha Afternoon Tea is priced at PHP 2,150++ for two persons and includes a choice of tea or coffee.
Guests are encouraged to enjoy the set slowly, beginning with the savory selections before moving into the pastries and sweets to fully appreciate the layers of flavor, texture, and craftsmanship behind the experience.
