Peter Zimmermann sets the rules of painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila

Step into the vibrant, colorful world of Peter Zimmermann. Opening on 03 February 2026 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila | The M Museum, German artist Peter Zimmermann presents his first institutional solo exhibition in the Philippines, Painting Rules. In collaboration with the Taipei- and New York-based gallery Nunu Fine Art, The M invites viewers to experience Zimmermann’s vivid reimaginings of color and form, unfolding across expansive, luminous surfaces.

Born in 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, and now based in Cologne, Zimmermann began his artistic journey in the 1980s. Early in his practice, he transformed the covers and titles of atlases, art books, travel guides, and dictionaries into what he termed “Book Cover Paintings,” executed in epoxy on canvas. His work later evolved into complex compositions built from layered epoxy resin, which refracted and distorted photographs, film stills, and diagrams. In 2014, Zimmermann began translating these conceptual explorations of “digital image generation” into oil painting. To him, digital image generation can have no “errors,” as, despite digital images being “empty” and composed solely of algorithms, they can still evoke emotion and expression through deconstruction.

“This is the guiding idea behind my epoxy resin paintings, which are based on digital templates such as photos, film stills, or diagrams. I deconstruct and alienate these templates using graphic algorithms before transferring them, layer by layer, onto canvas in numerous transparent coatings,” said Peter Zimmermann.

Through the interplay of oil or epoxy, he crafts sleek and large images composed of several interwoven layers of color and form. His works captivate viewers with their seamlessly blended gradients, rendered on large-scale dibond panels that radiate depth, clarity, and a liquid luminosity. Zimmermann has held solo exhibitions at Nunu Fine Art (Taipei, Taiwan), Leopold-Hoesch-Museum (Düren, Germany), Dirimart (Istanbul, Turkey), Galerie Michael Janssen (Berlin, Germany), Galerie Perrotin (Paris, France), and CAC Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, (Málaga, Spain). He has been a part of group exhibitions in the Moscow Biennale, the Venice Biennale, and The Museum für Moderne Kunst. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections, such as at Centre Georges Pompidou ad the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris, the Neue Galerie Graz in Austria, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Zimmermann has visited the Philippines many times in the past. Through his presence in Art Fair Philippines over the years, under the aegis of Nunu Fine Art Gallery, his works have found their way into the homes of several prominent Filipino collectors.

Moreover, the exhibition includes one of Zimmermann’s most recent artworks, Palladium (2022), which now forms part of The M Museum’s permanent collection, generously donated by the artist to the Museum.

In Painting Rules, the public will have the opportunity to see this painting, alongside many other artworks, up close and experience the art of Peter Zimmermann in greater depth.

An interactive student workshop facilitated by the artist, featuring the innovative use of custom-designed stickers to create a mural, will also take place at The M Museum before the exhibition opens. This includes a wall installation with a few of his paintings over it that connects the artist’s present style, oil and epoxy resin paintings, with his earlier artistic practice, which involved installations. This special program will allow young audiences to contribute to Zimmermann’s art while also making their own, fostering a creative and cooperative environment for young, aspiring artists.

The exhibition runs until 30 April 2026 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in BGC.
